These drawings continue my explorations with the notions of haptic and optic visuality, questioning the representation, reality, and relationship of senses. There is awareness and absence, figure and ground, perceiver and perceived.
These works also engage in notions of risk. Through the poetic framework of the Greek philosopher Plato, I contemplate the importance of considering cultural knowledge as an ongoing process, a fluid thing, reconstructed, reframed, and changed with every passing generation. If we fail to recognize this, then we entertain risk through complacency. As our perspectives and experiences vary significantly in how knowledge is shared, it is essential to remind ourselves that we cannot “turn a blind eye” to the disparities that still exist in our communities today. The drawings and prints illustrate the bridge between past, present, and future, and fundamental concerns of moving on.
“But when you buy the wares of knowledge, you cannot carry them away in another vessel; they have been sold to you, and you must take them into the soul and go your way, either greatly harmed or greatly benefited by the lesson.”
